The Funeral

 Funeral Set-up--

Karla is allergic to almost every flower so we ordered a greenery
spray even though we were slightly unsure how that might look.
We loved it and thought it was perfect for him.

BYU blue for a Cougar through and through

Back when our mother died, they didn't really have displays like is more custom now.  Valerie and Karla spent some time gathering things to represent my dad's life and they did a great job.  We all loved looking and talking about the items on display.

The t-shirt collection from Family Reunions, gifts, and trips that they made.  Afterwards, Karla gave the sack of t-shirts to the family and they were quickly taken by the grandchildren and children.  I ended up with the Egyptian Alphabet one.  A portion of his life represented in t-shirts!

The Cultural Hall set up for the family dinner
As we talked back and forth about the funeral, we discussed having games on the table at the family dinner since my dad loved games!  I mentioned that I had thought about getting checker boards because the first game I remember playing with my dad was "Fox and Geese" on a checker board.  Within a few hours, Linda (Rick's wife) had figured out how to make 9 with extra material and they ordered chips to go with them.

How cool is that!  After the family dinner, we drew numbers and then were able to pick one to take home.  What a sweet memento from the day!
We also had photos strung up across the stage which acted as memory triggers so we could talk about our memories of dad and events in our family's life.  (Also, an idea from Rick and Linda.)

On the back of the program we put all of the descendants.  Scott calls it his family cheat sheet.  He loved it.

My dad often quoted the scripture about happy is the man with his quiverful of children!  He was a happy man!

One final note about the funeral--it was so nice to gather as a family but also to share this moment with some of my parents' dear friends from Amarillo.  How sweet it was to see them and to hear of their love for our parents!  Lovetts, Bartons, Su and Steve Ferrell, the Garnetts, Kartchners, and others...some of the great people on earth come from the Panhandle of Texas.  I will always be grateful that my life included some time here.
