Ocean and sharks and turtles, oh, my!!

Saturday we headed out for our longest trip of my stay as we headed up to the northwestern area of the island.  This allowed for me to see a lot of the countryside which is green with hills and mountains all along the way.
Another example how they paint walls everywhere
It was an overcast day part of the time and then the sun came out and it was hot and humid......
Watch out for those...whatever they are!!
We think it might represent a wild boar but it is a cute creature for a sign.

 More carp windsocks
Driving along the western coast of the island.
The large trucks in Okinawa are often "chromed out" as my car loving son-in-law calls it.  Even though the trucks might do dirty jobs, the owners will deck them out with chrome everywhere.  They are shiny and clean.  They must clean them all day long.

It is hard to tell on this picture, but their no-walking guy is wearing a hat.  The signs for children in the area playing or a school zone include figures of children wearing hats, as well.  Not sure why???
We headed first for lunch at "Pie in the Sky" at least that is the English translation.  This is definitely a spot you would never know about as a typical tourist.  It is way up the hillside driving on single lanes with traffic in both direction. Tosha was driving up and Austen drove down--either way it was a "fun" ride.

Welcome to Pie in the Sky!
We got there at 12 and all of the tables were taken.  We had to wait for awhile until one opened up in the outside eating area.
view from the outside waiting area
These are the traditional Japanese tables.  Shoes are placed neatly by the table and they are sitting on the floor.  That doesn't work well for Niki (no high chairs so we ate on picnic tables in the "outside area".

You have got to love these two people and the green hilltops around them!

Niki was taking in the view as well.
 The English menu!!
The pizza which was very good and came with corn--a topping I first had in Hong Kong.  It was hot even with fans blowing on you.

After we ate lunch we headed down to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.  Like a small Sea World, there was a large aquarium area with lots of tanks of different types of fish, crabs, snarks, and other ocean creatures.
Wind socks again
And the traditional welcoming Okinawa creature
whose name I can't remember
They had lots of these amazing plant and materials statues throughout the park and also throughout Okinawa.
A nearby island.  There are several islands which make up the area of Okinawa.
 And the fish statue
This is a cuttlefish.  This was one of the very first things I saw when I went down in the lagoon on my first first dive.  It wasn't until after the dive, that our dive master talked about how amazing it was to see one and be able to follow it for a while.  I have been partial to them since then.
Niki loved the shark and ray tanks.

Tosha is a turtle fan so this picture is for her.
Our selfie at the Dolphin show....Remember I said it was a very hot and humid day!!!!
 Simple but enjoyable dolphin show......
 ...and a small whale.

We enjoyed the afternoon there but we were very glad to get back into the car and air conditioning. Niki and I slept most of the way home.

Saturday night was fun because we kicked Tosha and Austen out for a date night while Niki and I stayed in for the night.  He was great.  We read books, played cars and blocks, watched Daniel the Tiger (his favorite show) and chased each other around.  He will never remember but it was great for me.
Ignore me but isn't he cute.
