"God Loves Us!" talk in YSA branch

 God Loves Us

If you were raised in the Church, you grew up singing the words “I am A Child of God, And He has sent me here.”  And if you were a young women prior to 2019, you’ve said the words-- ” We are daughters of our Heavenly Father who loves us and we love Him.”  In 2019, it was changed to-- ”I am a beloved daughter of Heavenly Parents with a divine nature and eternal destiny.” Also in 2019- for the young men a theme was announced:  It starts—I am a beloved son of God, and He has a work for me to do.” Worldwide in wards, branches, and tiny groups of Saints—these words are sung or repeated every Sunday in one form or another.

We are children of Heavenly Parents who truly love us. But what does that mean? And how does it matter to us as we go about life on this very mortal place?

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught: “The first great commandment of all eternity is to love God with all of our heart, might, mind, and strength—that’s the first great commandment. But the first great truth of all eternity is that God loves us with all of His heart, might, mind, and strength.”1

Think about that for a moment—the Eternal God-the ruler over all of the universes! The God Almighty loves us with all of His heart, might, mind, and strength.  And not just us collectively as billions of people who have lived on this earth...but each of us individually and personally.  As recorded in scriptures and as I have experienced in my personal life, He knows our names and He seeks after us as a tender parent always would. Through modern revelations as in times of old, we know that we are literally His spiritual children. Knowing that can make all of the difference in our lives.

Do you sing “I am a child of God?” by rote or do you truly witness that you are a cherished spiritual offspring of Him?  Do you acknowledge your true relationship to divine Heavenly Parents in your deeds and actions...or is that relationship far from your daily life? Do you know that you are beloved by Them and actively try to fulfill Their plans for you in your own mortal journey or do you feel that your life is simply here to do with what you would like?  And like the questions asked by Alma in his great sermon in Alma 5:“..if ye have experience a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?”

Can you feel God’s love now? When is the last time you have felt that love which most often comes through the witness of the Holy Ghost? What are ways that we can seek to hold on to His Love in our day-to-day lives in this very loud and confusing place?  Like the fruit in the tree of life that we have been studying in Come Follow Me—we need to partake and continue to partake as we stand at the tree of life and its fruit—the Love of God.

Elder Alan T. Phillips said: “Do not misunderstand or devalue how important you are to your Father in Heaven. You are not an accidental by-product of nature, a cosmic orphan, or the result of matter plus time plus chance. Where there is design, there is a designer.

Your life has meaning and purpose. The ongoing Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ brings light and understanding regarding your divine identity. “

This is the work of a lifetime. Our task is to find God in our lives and love Him with our heart, might, mind, and strength. It is not always easy, but it is why we are here. Maybe one or all of the following suggestions might help you to look and to feel God’s love for you.

Number one: I know God loves me and all of us, because I see His handiwork in the world around me.

The story of the creation starts the Old Testament and other accounts are given in the Book of Moses and in Abraham.  Why?  Because God needed a place for His children to continue their journey.  He directed Jesus Christ in the creation of this earth so that “we will prove them herewith to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them.” Aba 3:25 Thus the earth stands as a witness of God love for us. As you are on this earth, look for ways in nature that you can see God’s love for you.  Flowers, oceans, the songs of the birds, the power of the wind testify of the Creators.  For others, it might be the beauty of a piece of music or a well-written poem that testify of the nearness of God and His love.  I have heard some who love numbers or physics or the stars and find God’s touch there.  If we intentionally look for Him, we will find Him and feel His love.  And then the remembrance of those things can bring those feelings back to us—when we are far from that moment in time.

Many years ago, Gary and I had the opportunity to learn to scuba dive. One time, we were diving in the Philippines along a cliff of rocks, practicing some skills where there was little coral and few fish.  All of a sudden, several tiny red fish swam in front of me—bright red and beautiful—but so little.  I thought, “Why did God waste time making cute red fish to live in this rock wall where no one would ever see them?” Immediately-my mind was filled with the words, “For you!” It was a tiny little moment in my life—but I knew and I know-- that God knew me and was aware of my thoughts and feelings.  This is a moment I will treasure throughout eternity. Tiny red fish testified that God love me.  What in nature testifies that God loves you?  Write it down, remember it, share it with others. Intentionally look for God’s love in the gifts of nature, in the arts, and in the stars.

Second, we see and can seek God’s love through prayer.  The scriptures give so many accounts of people seeking God in prayer and receiving answers and aid—Enos, Daniel, brother of Jared, Esther and more!!

Elder Alan T. Phillips reminds us: “You are His child. If you are feeling lost, if you have questions or lack wisdom, if you are struggling with your circumstances or wrestling with spiritual dissonance, turn to Him. Pray to Him for comfort, love, answers, and direction. Whatever the need and wherever you are, pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. For some, you may want to follow President Nelson’s invitation and ask “if He is really there—if He knows you. Ask Him how He feels about you. And then listen.”29

Third, we can know our Heavenly Father loves us because of the tender mercies which we can see in our own lives and in the lives of others.

Elder Michael Ringwood shared the following event from his friend, Paul: While attending school on a military base in Germany, Paul noticed two sisters who seemed to have a spiritual light. Asking why they were different brought the answer that they belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Soon Paul began meeting with missionaries and was invited to church. The next Sunday, as he got off the bus, he noticed two men dressed in white shirts and ties. He asked them if they were elders of the Church. They answered yes, so Paul followed them.

During the service, a preacher pointed to people in the congregation and invited them to testify. At the end of each testimony, a drummer gave a drum salute and the congregation called out, “Amen.”

When the preacher pointed to Paul, he stood up and said, “I know Joseph Smith was a prophet and the Book of Mormon is true.” There was no drum salute or amens. Paul eventually realized he had gone to the wrong church. Soon, Paul found his way to the right place and was baptized.

On the day of Paul’s baptism, a member he didn’t know told him, “You saved my life.” A few weeks earlier, this man had decided to look for another church and attended a service with drums and amens. When the man heard Paul bear his testimony of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon, he realized that God knew him, recognized his struggles, and had a plan for him.”

What a remarkable experience for both of them—and a testimony of God’s great love for each of His children.

Elder David A. Bednar said about tender mercies:” We should not underestimate or overlook the power of the Lord’s tender mercies. The simpleness, the sweetness, and the constancy of the tender mercies of the Lord will do much to fortify and protect us in the troubled times in which we do now and will yet live. …..when mortal experience and evaluation are insufficient to produce a desired outcome, and when it seems that perhaps we are so totally alone, truly we are blessed by the tender mercies of the Lord and made mighty even unto the power of deliverance.”

God’s love is poured upon us through tender mercies.  Don’t be so rushed in your life that you don’t look and remember these moments in our lives.

Fourth—the most important tool of them all—Jesus Christ.  In a common scripture, posted in fields in Arkansas and shown in the stadiums at football games—John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”…and the following verse “For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”  Like the common words of “I am A child of God,” we might skip over the power of these verses—but I testify it is true—God loves us SO much that He did give his only begotten Son—

Dieter F. Uchtdorf stated: When we feel insignificant, cast off, and forgotten, we learn that we may be assured that God has not forgotten us—in fact, that He offers to all His children something unimaginable: to become “heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.”2

….My beloved friends, your Heavenly Father loves you with a perfect love. He has proven His love in endless ways, but above all by giving His Only Begotten Son as a sacrifice and as a gift to His children to make the return to our heavenly parents a reality.”

Elder Alan Phillips said: “You are a beloved child of Heavenly Father. ..God loves you so much that He sent His Son to heal, rescue, and redeem you.4

We know God loves us because he gave His only begotten Son to “heal, rescue, and redeem you.”—This is the matchless gift from God to us.

It is hard to always feel God’s love for you especially when you are in the middle of the “beginnings” of your lives—There are questions to figure out, directions to be decided, major life choices still ahead—the world is loud and demanding and Satan does not want you to pause a moment to feel God’s love for you and to learn of His plan for your life.  But pause you must—in nature, in prayers to God, in looking to see the tender mercies in your life, and most of all, in reaching out to Christ for aid, succor, forgiveness, and hope—and most of all to feel His love and the love of our Heavenly parents.

In conclusion I would like to share a tiny piece of an experience—from a week that I describe as the worst one of my life.  As background, my sweet mother-in-law after a quick decline passed away on a Monday morning.  On that same day, our son, Ben, who struggles with schizophrenia, was admitted to a local inpatient unit for treatment. Because of his level of symptoms, he was transferred first on Wednesday and again on Thursday to a local ER which led to a 96-hour ER stay because suitable placement couldn’t be found.  So, we were planning for a funeral and dealing with a crisis at the ER.  It was a bad week but was filled with amazing answers to prayers, manifestation of God’s love, and the power of Christ to bring peace to us.  Here is one of those tender mercies—I will share the account as I wrote it in my blog—This happened on Thursday the day before my mother-in-law’s funeral.

In the afternoon, I got a text from my sister-in-law, Vonette, checking on Ben and telling me that Maggie (Charon's mother-in-law) had dropped off an apple pie and a cherry pie.

My response: "Save me a piece of cherry pie...that is my all-time favorite pie.  It is what my mom made me for my birthday every year since I was ten or so.  It feels like a tender mercy that Maggie would bring one today."

Later that night, Tosha texted me and said that Charon had dropped off a whole cherry pie with instructions that I was to get the whole pie.  When I got home around 9:30, Tosha and I had a piece and talked for a while in the quiet house before I went to work on my talk.  It was great and it was just a perfect thing in the middle of a very hard week.  Again, it felt like my mom was watching and helping me each day.

Now for the rest of the story:

In the limo after the funeral, Charon turned and asked how I liked the pie.  "I loved it," I said.  She and Vonette exchanged glances and started laughing and I knew there was more to the story.  It turned out that Maggie had brought over an apple pie and a STRAWBERRY pie, not cherry.  However, when I responded the way I did, my sisters-in-laws became determined to get me a cherry pie.  They called all the bakeries in the area but could only find a cherry pie in South Salt Lake.  They were actually thinking about going to get it, but realized that they had too much to do to prepare for the funeral and the family gathering to make that trip especially in the late afternoon traffic.  So, Charon called Maggie and asked her to bake me a cherry pie.  Maggie had never made a cherry pie before, but headed to the store for pie filling and baked an amazing and beautiful pie …It was that pie that was delivered to my door after a long day at the ER.

And that, my friends, is how God works through other people to remind you that you are loved, you are known, and therefore you can do another day!

In the words of one of my favorite hymns-- (second verse)

In ev’ry condition—in sickness, in health,

In poverty’s vale or abounding in wealth,

At home or abroad, on the land or the sea—

As thy days may demand, as thy days may demand,

As thy days may demand, so thy succor shall be.

I testify that our Heavenly Parents and our Savior, Jesus Christ, know us and love us and that They have a plan for our lives. I invite you to look to feel that love in nature, through prayers, noticing tender mercies, and most of all through Jesus Christ. We must learn to love Them with all of our heart, might, mind and strength so that we can return again to live in Their presence. Of this I testify, In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

"Love Your Neighbor" Jena's talk

Gary and Jena both spoke on "Love Your Neighbor."  Gary shared some short experiences of watching his parents render service to their neighbors and community.

Here is Jena's talk--She did great as well.

Second Great Commandment

Jesus taught us that we should love your neighbors.

Who is your neighbor?

Everyone is.

---People in our family, people next door to us, or people across the world.

We are all brothers and sisters of our Heavenly Father.

We can show our love by:

Being kind.

Praying for others.

Serving people who need our help.

And being missionaries and sharing the love of God and Jesus with others.

President Nelson said: “Giving help to others is our joy. (Even), I might add, when it takes us out of our comfort zone. Living that second great commandment is the key to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ.”

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

The Lone Photo

Here is the only photo I took last week.  This was last night as Gary and Jena started a new puzzle on the dining room table as I watched the BYU Men's volleyball game, streaming from our laptop.

We started the week with another ice day on Monday, so mission meetings were over zoom and we all stayed home for the day.  Monday night Gary got sick with a stomach bug which hit me about 12 hours later (mine was much easier than Gary's bout.)  That kept us all home on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Thursday we did our regular run to Clarksville for Institute and dinner.  Friday Jena and I spent the morning helping a sister in the Ft. Smith ward whose family is going through some hard things.  We will do that weekly for awhile until she doesn't need us any more.  Jena loved playing with their three young kids.  Friday night was game night at the Church from 8-11.  Our plan was to head out around 10, but game playing was happening.  We ended the night playing Apples to Apples which we haven't played with Jena for a very long time.  She loved it and it was a good game for her to join in.  We had a tiny group but still had fun and good conversation.

Saturday was mostly spent preparing our talks for Church today...plus the evening volleyball game.  We missed the Texas/BYU men's basketball game but BYU won in this first and only Big 12 matchup between the two teams in Provo.

And that brings us to today--We gave our talks in Church, helped serve a nacho bar to the young adults after Church, and then attended a devotional for all youth and young adults about missionary work.  Sister Collins spoke which was amazing, of course and she shared a brief clip from President Collins who had to attend some meetings in Missouri today.  They also got short video clips from five of the missionaries currently serving from the stake who shared their testimonies to the youth of the stake.  That was very sweet.  The stake president shared an amazing message also by video as he was out of town this weekend.  He said "You  know we are talking about missionary work--but I want to invite you first to read the Book of Mormon this year. "  Basically, his message was become converted because then the desire to be a missionary will follow.  After the devotional, they had eight or nine members of the stake who had served mission set up displays from the area where they served and food, etc.  They did a great job.  And they served popcorn as well.

And that was our day and our week--even without photos, our service continues!

Happy Sunday!

Fun Friday

In between our two temple visits on Friday, we went to lunch with Elder and Sister Ellis at PF Chang's.  Yummy food and fun conversations!  We love the two of them and are glad to know that they will be lifelong friends even after our missions are done.  One of the fun blessings of serving a senior mission!

We had to pick some chairs up from the mission office for the Mena elders but then we still had some time to fill before going back to the temple.  We decided to visit the Walmart Heritage Lab--a little museum they created while the actual Walmart Museum on the Bentonville Town Square is being redone.  It is really just one big room with displays along the walls, but it was interesting exhibit and I came away with a greater appreciation for Walmart and Sam Walton who was the genius behind it all.  He was actually born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma--but he made Bentonville the center of Walmart organization.  It is an interesting story.  Similar in some ways to JC Penny's story that we learned while visiting his hometown in Missouri.  These men are very interesting people who showed the power of drive and leadership.  Museums are such interesting places--glad we stopped at this one.

The first thing we found as we pulled to the parking lot for the Heritage Lab was this amazing art work on the parking garage--

It is hard to be amazed with photos, but the colors change as the air currents blow by so it is in a constant state of changing patterns.  It is made with 268,947 stainless steel disks.  It is a tribute to the small mouth bass which is an important game fish in Arkansas.  The numbers listed in the fourth bullent point are the totals of the local and out of state visitors who come to fish each year in Arkansas.
People are so creative and we are lucky that we can enjoy their talents.

The Walmart Heritage Lab:

Sam Walton received the Metal of Freedom from the Bushes shortly before his death in 1992.

Some of the branding for Walmart over the years---

I love this quote which the exhibit said that Mrs. Walton had over her home office desk--
"It 's not what you gather in life, it's what you scatter in life that tells the kind of life you have lived."
Isn't that so true!!

Drone deliveries are already in beta testing in several places---crazy to think that you can order something and have it dropped into your yard within an hour!!  That would have been useful when raising five kids and having someone sick and being out of cough syrup or whatever--oh the world that we live in!
A sample drone from DroneUp
They had one small display of returns----which included the reason they were returned
The customer returned it because "it was possessed."

The note says:  Obviously crushed by a heavyweight, the customer returned it
"because he couldn't serve well with it."

This one "never told the correct time."
Seriously--and I worry when I need to take something back because it was broken in the box!!! I didn't know that you could return for these reasons!

Fun visit!

Downtown Bentonville---

Town Square still with its Christmas tree in the center---

We lead such a great life.  It is not without challenges and worries, of course.  Life is filled with both but we have been so blessed even in those trials--and it helps to remember that!!

Fanny Collier

Spire of the Bentonville House of the Lord

In the temple, we do the needed ordinances for people who have passed away so that they are qualified for eternal life with God if they so choose.  We know that baptism and other covenants are needed for all people and it is an honor to be involved in this work for family members who had died.

The temple or the House of the Lord is a beautiful place--decorated and organized to be a sacred and holy place filled with remembrances of Christ and our Heavenly Father.  It is a peaceful, joyful place and the Holy Spirit is very accessible there.  It is a bit of Heaven and helps us leave the world behind and think about more holier things.

I give that background to help those who haven't had that experience understand my little story.

Friday morning, I was doing the work for Fanny Collier.  She was born in the 1800s and married into my Ackley line--my dad's adoptive mom's family.  As is my custom, I prayed about her before the session started and immediately I was aware of her and her joy at this day finally happening.  This has happened to me before--but it was still such a sweet gift.  That joy was present throughout the session and even as I left the temple to go to lunch, it stayed.  I realized that I was so glad that we were going back to do sealings because included in our list--were her sealing to her spouse and also to her parents which completed her temple work (except for her children which I now have to find!).  Later when that sealing took place, I started to cry before the sealer even spoke her name because her joy was so full.

I don't know how this all works--what happens in the spirit world and how they know and what they know about what is happening on earth in the middle of their lives in the spirit world--but I testify on Friday, Fanny Collier knew and she was glad!

Temple Trips Times Two

The Bentonville Temple is about 90 minutes north of us and we have been going once a month on the third Friday of the month.  Every other transfer, the zone has a special missionary session at the temple on Wednesday.  And this past week, both of those things happened in the same week--just like last October.  It was a sweet week---

The weather was clear for Wednesday travel which made us all happy as we were able to head up to the temple as a zone.  This time, in addition to the office senior couples who attended the session, we were joined by President and Sister Collins as well as Elder and Sister Baird--who are our brand new senior couple.  They had arrived the night before and spent the night with the Collins.  They will be serving in Springfield, Missouri with the young adults.

Of course, we got pictures afterwards--

President Beutler is a member of the mission presidency.  He is great and the missionaries love him.  He serves in the temple on Wednesday mornings each week.

The YSA missionaries--Sister Holding and Sister Anderson

The important selfie...

Ft. Smith Zone--January 2024----
Love these sweet missionaries and being in the temple is a very sweet experience.

As I mentioned, we went again on Friday for a session as well and were joined by Sister and Elder Ellis.  We did the 10:30 morning session and then hung around in Bentonville and then did sealings at 5:00 pm. That was also a wonderful day!  No pictures at the temple though--too cold to stand outside.

The Lord's Creations

In preparation for last week's Institute class which covered the Creation of the earth, I asked the young adults on social media to share a photo of nature-- here is a selection of what they shared!

this is Esther loving the snow that fell last Sunday

One of Jena's that she shared

Sister Anderson, one of the YSA sister missionaries

And then this photo from Elder Esera--who is now home.....

in Samoa!!!!  On a very cold day in Arkansas, we all wished we had that view of the Pacific Ocean and the warm breeze that certainly must be there!

The world is a very beautiful place and truly testifies of its Creator!

Our lesson and class on Tuesday ended up being canceled because of the icy road conditions. No one wanted to be traveling after dark.

I had already begun making meatballs and spaghetti sauce in two crock pots before the decision was made to cancel so we dropped them off before dark to the sisters and elders' apartments.  They were happy to have a hot meal at home during a cold and icy few days.

Facebook Post-January 14th

Trying to keep track of my posts on Facebook:

"Happy New Year! We hope 2024 brings many great adventures in your lives, in your families, and in your Churches and communities. Be found doing good and joy will trail after you!

After a busy Christmas season, life became super quiet as Gary (on Christmas morning) and then Jena and I got Covid. So we spent our "break" from Institute staying home and coughing. Fortunately, none of us got really sick...mostly tired. We stayed home, read, did puzzles, and watched lots of movies!
We started teaching Institute again this past week and will start again in Clarksville this coming week. We will be teaching "Jesus Christ and His Everlasting Gospel" in Ft. Smith and the Book of Mormon in Clarksville. What a powerful combination as the Book of Mormon serves as a second witness to the Bible of Jesus Christ's divine role as our Savior, Redeemer, and Advocate!
We were suppose to speak in Church today but meetings got canceled because of a winter snowstorm. So, we are staying home and keeping warm while watching the pretty snow flakes...except for Jena and I who played in the storm for a bit. I actually made a snow angel (photos below.)
My little miracle this past week: I was running some errands earlier in the week and driving north on I-540. I was traveling in the right lane following a truck carrying furniture in its bed. As we began to pass a merging lane onto the freeway, I thought I should move over but decided it wasn't necessary because both the truck and I would be clearly passed when the car on the ramp needed to merge onto the freeway. Just then the thought came that I was in Arkansas and it is typical to see cars merge over to the left lane whenever there are cars on the merge lane--they are kind like that here--so I merged over. Within 3-4 seconds after I merged over, a big piece of carpet along with some cardboard came flying off the truck and spattered on the road beside me. If I had remained in that lane, it would have landed right in front of me or on my car! What would have been a scary moment was avoided as I listened to that prompting to move over--like the good people of Arkansas do!
Have you seen the workings of God in your life this past week?
Have a great week and I hope you are all keeping warm!
I know it is odd to have Christmas photos first but since I posted on Christmas Eve last, that is the next day....scroll through to see the snow in Arkansas from today (January 14)"

A Snow Sunday!

In anticipation of the cold temperatures and snow, our Church was canceled along with all of the meetings within the stake.  (Good news for us since we had been asked on Thursday to speak in Church :) That was postponed as well, of course.)  As the branch president said, It might not seem like much to people from Utah, but we do not have the tools to manage the snow and ice on the roads.  We don't disagree.  We are familiar with icy roads and don't plan to leave our house if the roads are icy.  Ether way out requires traveling up or down steep hills with no shoulders.  We don't plan on sliding off a road if we can help it.

So we have been enjoying a quiet Sunday working on Institute lessons (me) and doing family history research for people buried in Arkansas (Gary).

Jena and I did head out into the snow for a few minutes--

Jena and I tried to make a heart in the snow but we didn't get a great picture of it.  Gary said we needed to drag our feet more to uncover the green grass for the heart outline.  We love you, world!!!

He did step out into the weather to take pictures of me making a snow angel!  For some reason, it felt like the right thing to do!!
For the grandkids!!!

We thought we might try a snowball fight but the snow is too dry and doesn't pack together.

This one is for Gary (he took it) and he told me he liked it--so I decided even though it isn't my favorite that I would include it in this record.  He said he loves that I was having fun in the snow!

Now we are sitting in the warm house and watching the snow continue to fall.  They are expecting about 3"--we will see.  The challenging thing is that there is artic air behind this snowstorm and the temperatures will remain in single digits until Thursday.  That means snow everywhere and ice on the roads.  We will take it day by day.  We are set for in-person interviews with the mission president tomorrow at the Church and car inspections for all of the young missionaries.  They are worried about finding open car washes to wash their cars before inspections.  We are guessing they will be cancelled because of the snow but we will wait and see--no news yet!
