Tuesday morning started the service of President Douglas Holmes and Sister Erin Holmes. We had the opportunity to gather with the other zone leaders in a afternoon meeting with the Holmes and also with Elder and Sister Jackson who will be replacing the Larsons in the Presidency at the end of the month. It was delightful to get to know them a little and fun to see that they both come with good senses of humor (how do you make that plural??) Anyway, humor is a great tool for working with lots and lots of missionaries.
They have served as mission leaders in the Michigan Detroit Mission around 2010-2013 and then he served in the General YM Presidency for five years after that. You might recognize him as he spoke a few times in Conference or other meetings.
We got to spend another hour with them on Friday as the three zone leader couples did our "typical" new missionary orientation to share what we do in our zone. Then next week, they will spend an 1 1/2 hours with us to get to know our zone and the work we do. You can tell that they have a great desire to know us and the other missionaries and to understand the work that is being done in the mission.
Side note: On Friday afternoon (after we had met with them in the joint meeting) Elder Spencer came to my desk to thank me for the zone newsletter. That was kind. Then he said, "Because you had included a photo of the new mission president, I recognized him when they got into the elevator with me. I had just received a donation and they were asking me lots of questions about what I was going to do with it now and how the donation came to arrive at the library. Because I knew who they were, I was comfortable answering their questions. So thank you again for the newsletter."
It will be another great privilege for us to serve with them for the next month or so until we are released.
