On our drive down to Oro Valley on July 2, Gary began to sing me a song entitled "When I'm 64." He said years ago, he heard this song and decided that he was going to sing it to me when I turned 64. Not sure exactly if that part is true, but it melted my heart anyway. My birthday had been crazy but in the quiet of our travels, he sang (and some of the words he made up were even better that the actual song which we listened to in full when we got home later in the week.)
It is a Beatles song. (Interestingly, this summer we went to see the movie, "Yesterday," which was about the Beatles and their songs in a weird sort of way. This was one of the songs highlighted in the movie.)
Gary isn't 64 yet, but I can definitely assure him that I will still need him "when he's sixty-four"?
WHEN I'M 64"
"When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you
I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck and Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four"
I am so so lucky to have spent the last 41+ years with him and look forward to many more!
