If you asked Jena now what she did this summer, her first comment is always, "I went fishing." And she did. She went fishing, caught a fish, cooked it, and ate it! All on a Friday afternoon when I was flying home from Seattle.
The back story: From time to time, we learn about the things which are on Jena's bucket list and sometimes we are a bit surprised. However one thing that has been on her list for a VERY LONG time was to go fishing. We are not fishermen and I am not sure why this got on her list, but she has talked about it for a long time. Gary and I had talked about options and tried to fit it in here or there along the way over the past 10 years or so, but never made it happen.
So while I was in Seattle with Tosha at the end of August, Gary took matters into his own hands and surprised Jena with a fishing trip to a local fish hatchery.
After they each had caught a fish, they headed over to Grandma Hall's for a quick fishing frying lesson and to eat their fish.
Jena was very proud of herself and she told me she would like to do it again!
There is a particular sense of pride--or maybe sense of accomplishment--when you do something that you have always wanted to do. Not like you have accomplished world peace or cured cancer, but just a little thing that you thought you wanted to do and then you do it. Jena has that about fishing now. That is why it is the first thing she thinks about when asked about her summer--which was very full with lots of stuff.
That is the purpose of bucket lists or just for fun mortal goals or whatever you call it---just to add a bit of flavor to life! As I mentioned before, I highly recommend creating this type of list.
