And the Craziness Ensues....

Since the reorganization of the division where we serve in the Church History Library, there had been rumors and rumors of rumors that there would be a move of the employees and missionaries on the 2nd floor.  Finally mid-August it was announced along with some other major changes in the way the department was organized.  September 7th was set as the day of the BIG move--we should all come in casual clothes and prepare to move.

Our missionaries kept busy trying to get their stuff organized and packed in anticipation of this big move even without knowing where they might end up.  Part of the changes involved several of our missionaries being moved from the Utah area to the US/Canada area joining the area where Gary and I serve.  The Utah area was folded into the US/Canada team.  As a result, lots of meetings have been held to help those missionaries transition without even clearly knowing where they will go and where they will sit.  Through the uncertainty, our goal was to make sure that all of our missionaries knew they were needed and wanted and had tasks to do.

September 7th came and went without a clear direction of who was going where, so it was still a waiting game.  Finally, a map came out to the managers (and we got a sneak peek) and preparations for the big move came in earnest.  It is not easy to move 40 missionaries and maybe the same amount of employees around within the same space.  People had to move out before someone could move in--but where was the stuff to go in the meantime and what about the valuable collections piled on tables everywhere--they couldn't get lost in the process?  Slowly, the shift began.  I seriously don't know what would have happened without Gary and his skill with computers.  He moved each missionary computer and phone to their new desk and made sure they all worked correctly before the missionaries came back into work.  A few suit pants have gone to the cleaners during this process as he climbed under desk after desk to plug in the needed connections.  He thought through problems and approached employers before things became a problem.  He managed the phone system problems, spending extra time on the phone with the HELP desk with missionaries getting things fixed.  It was a big move and a big deal--but Gary was the right person in the right place at the right time.  It was amazing to see that play out in such a way!

It took about 3 weeks to get things settled into place and there is still more training and adjustments in processes to take place, but at least we know where the missionaries are (today).  In the process, we lost our sweet window spot and now have an open cubicle in the US/Canada area of the 2nd floor.

More space is nice, but there isn't the privacy of our other cubicle or the window view.  When we get phone calls which is frequently, we often have to find an open office to go into and shut the door for privacy.

It is likely that we will end up sharing these two cubicles in the future with a service missionary, but for now the space is nice with the three of us.

Changes---what life and missions are made of!
