The Piccolo Player (out of order--September 16)

Sister Holmes gave each missionary
a copy of the story and a wooden "piccolo"

At the Mission Tour Devotional, Sister Holmes shared a story about Sir Michael Costa, a famous orchestral conductor in the 19th century.  The story is that he was leading a rehearsal which was a combined performance with the orchestra and a great choir.  Middle way through the performance, for some unknown reasons, the lone piccolo player stopped playing.  Maybe he was coughing or maybe he just felt his part didn't matter.  All of a sudden, Sir Costa stopped the practice and asked "Stop, Stop, where is the piccolo?"  To that master's ear, it was clear and missing.

She related this to our work as missionaries.  Sometimes, we aren't sure how our part affects the whole, but God and Jesus do and they notice as we serve in their behalf.

She quoted one of her favorite scriptures which I love as well:  D & C 64:33-34

"Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.

Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days."

Loved this!

(Side note:  I couldn't find an original source for this story so I will have to ask Sister Holmes.  He was known as a very exacting and disciplined director.)
