Friend to Friend Performances-Dec. 7 and 8

Jena was a cute elf in the Friend to Friend Christmas Program on the big stage at Centerpoint Theatre.  These are the only two photos I had on my phone although I know I took many more.  It was usual--fun songs, cute costumes, and staging--and happy tears.  They all have such fun being on stage and performing.  We are so blessed to have Shelley Davies and all of the other volunteers who run this program.

This year again, Gary was a hero and  made two extra trips to Provo to bring her up on Wednesday to attend a dress rehearsal and then take her back that night.  Our cars know the way to Provo for sure after these past few years.

They highlights each of the performers by assigning them an attribute that they teach others.  For Jena, Shelley said, "This is our amazing Jena.  Her word is knowledge. She served a  LDS mission and now is going to BYU to continue to learn. She seeks knowledge."  (not exact words)

Mom Fail Moment

We arrived at the Adaptive Show Choir concert about an hour early because we were coming from volunteering at the Centerpoint theatre and that is how the timing worked out.  As we walked in, I remembered that Jena had "reminded" me that parents bring flowers for performers.  Hint, hint, hint!  But I did not have any flowers and the flower shop in the basement of the Wilkinson Center was closed.

Soon after we sat down, Sara Bailey's family sat by us and commented that same thing--Sara had reminded them about bringing flowers but she had forgotten.  We were bemoaning our "mom fail moment" and trying to figure out if we could run somewhere and get some flowers before the performance started.  At that same moment, we noticed two young BYU students sit at the end of our row with a dozen gorgeous red roses.  Annagrath asked them if they had gotten them on campus and the student said no that she had gotten them at a store off campus.  Annagrath asked if she wanted to sell one or two of them to her.  The student laughed, not really thinking she was serious.  Annagrath was dead serious and I would have bought one as well.  That is the power of "mom fail moments."  Oh, well, we were stuck.  We would have to own up to it at the end.  (Of course, Jena is always sweet about stuff like this. The times it does happen, she is delighted, but she is okay when it doesn't.)

We enjoyed the performance, cried a few tears at the end, took photos, and had fun.  After the performance, I was hurrying through the crowds of performers, students, and families to get to Jena in order to take a photo with her and her choir buddy.  Of course, she was at the very back of the group.  And this is what I saw:

There was Jena holding all of those beautiful flowers standing by this BYU student who had sat on our row.  She (Alia) was having another friend take a picture of her with Jena.  She saw me take this photo and asked if I was her mother.  When I said yes, she said, please take a photo of us looking at you.

And then she told me her story.  Alia is a freshman at BYU and was living away from her home for the first time.  She said that it has been a very hard adjustment and she was lonely.  When she received the email from her biology teacher asking if someone who serve as Jena's buddy, she quickly responded to the email and also prayed that she would be picked.  She was so delighted when she was notified that she had been chosen.  She said that Jena was her first friend at BYU, that it was the class that she also knew who she would sit by and that Jena would smile at her and bump knuckles and make her whole day go better.  She said that she relied on those days to make it through her first weeks of school.  She said that she knew that Heavenly Father knew she needed that and made it happen.

A bit later, I mentioned to Vicki, the WW director, that we had met Alia.  She commented that Alia was amazing and that 14 students had volunteered from that class to be Jena's buddy.  She said that she didn't know how to pick between them based on their brief comments, but looking down the list, she just felt Alia was right and she had been wonderful.

I know I have mentioned that when we adopted Jena, one of the strong impressions I had was that we would not be alone to parent her--that angels would be around and always there.  How true that has been in her life and ours!  However, we also know that Jena herself has been an angel to those around her, too.  Maybe better than most of us, she touches people softly and they feel love--her love and the love of our Heavenly Father.

I am glad that I forgot flowers for Jena that day.  It made these even more sweet.  I teared up several times in the next 10 days as they sat on our kitchen table just thinking about Alia's story and how Jena was an answer to her prayers.

Jena also got these cute red carnations from some of her Family Home Evening group sisters who came to the concert as well.
It wasn't hard to get into the holiday spirit with this type of stuff happening.  :)

The beginnings of December

My phone beeped as I was walking into my office and there was this darling photo of a sleeping Ava.  Tosha and Jessica have been so good to send photos of their kids to me and I love it so much.  One of my co-workers is expecting her first baby so I showed it to her and said--this is what your mother expects.  She said, "My mom lives a couple of blocks away.  I am hoping I get her out of my house long enough to send her a photo."  That would be fun, too.

Part of Tosha's Christmas present, but it is taller than we expected so they will have to wait until one of us brings a car between Utah and Seattle.  For the month of December it guarded all of our presents for the grandchildren (which I didn't have to hide at Grandma Hall's like I did when the kids were little.)
I was able to get the blocks made and started trying different arrangements for Ava's quilt.  Tosha likes the chevron pattern so I found a picture online and then figured out how to do it.  I love the fabrics in this quilt which include a fabric that was in Scarlett's quilt (our first granddaughter), some music fabrics, ice cream which Tosha loves, polka dots for me, and a paisley for my mother. There are other connections as well but those are the highlights.

The first block I sewed together

I also took a minute on my Friday off on November 30 to get the Little Library ready for Christmas.  It was a big hit this year.  Almost all of the children's books were taken and only about four of the adult books were still in when I took them out yesterday.  It made me happy to think about families reading new and old Christmas stories during the Christmas season.  I might have to stock up on some more for next year.

December 1st--  BYU ADAPTIVE SHOW CHOIR Performance

We headed down to Provo to attend Jena's first concert of the season.  This Adaptive Show Choir was started by a BYU student this year and is totally run by BYU students.  Jena loves their weekly practices and loved performing.  Each choir member has a BYU student assigned to dance and sing with.  It was so fun and Jena loves her BYU blue t-shirt.

Here she comes

This is Jena's choir buddy.  She is getting ready to leave on a mission to Europe to speak German.  That is Jena's report anyway.
Here is Jena with her roommates in the Wonderwood Program...Megan, Emily, Sara and Jena

The girls with Olivia and Vicki with Wonderwood.

It was a great event and we were so grateful for the wonderful experiences Jena is having with all of these students.

(I was such a slacker as a student.  I didn't get involved in any extra projects like this.  These BYU students and the others that volunteer in the Wonderwood program are amazing and light years ahead of where I was at at 18-25 years old.)

Where to start?

I just plugged in my phone to download photos and it reported that I have 270 photos to download.  Don't worry, they aren't all coming on the blog, but it is a reflection on the busyness of the season.  I had a goal that I would not let the "busy" of the season stand in the way of the peace, joy, and love of the season.  I decided to only do things one at a time and truly love what each event or moment included.  And I had a great Christmas...except Walmart couldn't find my Christmas cards until Dec. 24th so I am just finishing getting them done and mailed.  The rest will be in the mail tomorrow.

So  ....
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year-2019!!

And now to the review of the 2019 Christmas season.  I need to get it completed so that I can take advantage of the current discount for blog books. There will be a number of posts.  Just start here and move forward! (if you reading it on the blog.  If you are reading the book, it is already in order.)
